“Who Knew?” Economics

Salon reported today that the Administration has asked for an additional $120 billion for Iraq and Afghanistan—that’s in addition to the $226 billion already allocated.

Maybe I wouldn’t feel so bad if the Administration’s plans for Iraq hadn’t included handing $82 million in cash to a convicted felon who doled it out to his friends.

Meanwhile, in wake of the State of the Union, the President is systematically shredding our domestic safety nets, from student loans to Medicare and Social Security.

Instead of retiring, I’m thinking of going into government contract work. After all, the President wants to privatize Social Security, and believes that the free market can cure our fiscal flu. I’m sure the war will still be going on, and we still have to bring democracy to Iran. Plenty of work for everyone, and I bet it will be easier to get our prescriptions filled there than here.

Here’s a sad/hilarious update. I sent a message similar to this column to the Whitehouse today. Here’s the reply. Just as we suspected, this Whitehouse is closed to all opinions but its own!

Update: Thank goodness, the Whitehouse answered me. They really care about my opinion! I’m sure I’ll sleep better—that is, until someone in the Department of Homeland Security reads it and puts a tap on my phone:

On behalf of President Bush, thank you for your correspondence. We appreciate hearing your views and welcome your suggestions. Due to the large volume of e-mail received, the White House is unable to respond to every message, and therefore this response is an autoreply. Thank you again for taking the time to write.
